IT Manager Webcast: Closing the Network Backdoor: Using Forefront Threat Management Gateway Beta 2 to Create a Safe Web Experience

As employees surf the Web, they can accidentally bring in malware or visit sites that are restricted by your corporate policy. Current security solutions may not be able to detect these issues as more and more Web image applications encrypt themselves.

In this webcast, we describe how Web 2.0 evolves the threat landscape from the network to the content and application layers, and we explain how the Microsoft Forefront Threat Management Gateway Beta 2 can help make sure Web traffic, whether encrypted or unencrypted, stays safe and in accordance to your Web usage policies.

Presenter: Bill Jensen, Senior Product Manager, Microsoft Corporation

Why Facebook is for Old Fogies

While this isn’t a security article, I just had to share it with you. I’ve conveniently ignored facebook for the last  five years without any negative effect on my life. I had always thought of it as a post-adolescent waste of time. But then, I joined the facebook crowd this year and got a bunch of “friends”. Seems like a lot of imageolder people like me are joining facebook to find old high school and college friends. This is consistent with the “long tail” effect of potentially disruptive technologies.

But back to the question of whether or not I was right about facebook being a waste of time for post-adolescents. I have to say a qualified “yes”. Not because it isn’t a waste of time (that part isn’t under question), but whether or not it’s for post-adolescents.

I suppose it depends on your definition of post-adolescent. If you stretch the definition to “middle-age” then I was right :)

You’ll see what I mean when you read the article at:

http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1...0.html

And when you’re done with that, make sure to read Deb Shinder’s article on the security risks of social networking at:

What’s New in Windows 7 for IT Pros

“Users are becoming increasingly computer-savvy, and they expect more from the technology they use at  work. They expect to be able to work from home, from branch offices, and on the road, without a decrease in productivity. As the needs of users have changed, the demands on IT professionals have increased. image

Today, IT professionals are being asked to provide more capabilities and support greater flexibility, while continuing to minimize cost and security risks. With Windows 7, IT professionals can meet the needs of their users in a way that is more manageable. Businesses can enable employees to work more productively at their desks, at home, on the road, or in a branch office.

Security and control are enhanced, reducing the risk associated with data on lost computers or external hard drives. Desktop management is streamlined, so it takes less work to deploy Windows 7 and keep it running smoothly. And because Windows 7 is based on the Windows Vista® foundation, companies that have already deployed Windows Vista will find that Windows 7 is highly compatible with existing hardware, software, and tools…

Check out what’s new in Windows 7:

  • Applocker
  • Biometrics
  • Group Policy
  • Handwriting Recognition
  • Networking
  • Service Accounts
  • Smart Cards
  • User Account Control

Windows 7 Security Enhancements

Security is still a top concern for IT professionals; now that Windows® 7 Beta is available, questions regarding what Microsoft has done with the Windows 7 operating system abound. There is a lot of ground to cover—more than we can in a brief article— but there are three primary topics that merit our focus here.

  • Windows 7 is built upon the security foundations of the Windows Vista® operating system while improving auditing and the User Account Control (UAC) experience.
  • Windows 7 helps IT control what software can run in their environment with AppLocker™.
  • Windows 7 enhances the core features of BitLocker™ Drive Encryption with the introduction of BitLocker To Go™ for removable storage devices.
