Disable UAC using MSCONFIG

There’s no doubt that UAC is a valuable tool for securing a PC. However, there are users who may prefer to go without UAC security and need a way to quickly and easily disable it. Here’s one method you can use to disable UAC on your Windows Vista computer:

1. Click Start, type msconfig, and then press Enter. The System Configuration tool opens.

2. Click the Tools tab.

3. Click Disable UAC and then click Launch.

A command window appears, and shortly thereafter, a notification bubble appears informing you that UAC is disabled. Restart your computer to apply the change.

To re-enable UAC with Msconfig.exe, follow the preceding steps, clicking Enable UAC instead of Disable UAC.

TechNet Webcast: Security Deployment Review Tool (Level 200)

Security of an application is in large part directly dependent on the underlying host configuration on which the application is deployed. In this webcast, we focus on a tool aimed at securing the host operating system for application deployment, developed by the Microsoft Information Security group. The tool provides automated analysis of host configuration based on a security checklist.

Presenter: Anil Kumar Revuru, Senior Software Design Engineer, Microsoft Corporation
Anil Kumar Revuru (RV) currently works for Microsoft as a security technologist, where he is responsible for architecting security tools. Among various tools he has worked on is the Microsoft Threat Analysis and Modeling tool, which he architected and led development. Security Considerations in High Performance Computing

“Windows® HPC Server 2008 is a cost-effective, high-performance computing (HPC) solution. One of its primary advantages is that Windows HPC Server 2008 can be deployed, managed, and extended using familiar Windows tools and technologies. This also means that the foundation for securing Windows HPC Server 2008 is the same as that for securing Windows Server® 2008, and can be executed by taking advantage of resources such as the Windows Server 2008 Security Guide.

In addition to the broad guidance offered by the Windows Server 2008 Security Guide, there are elements of security unique to HPC, and the cluster architecture can be a significant contributor to its overall security. Consider the two types of computers in a compute cluster. The head node is the controlling node, which is represented by the server that will perform all security checks and orchestrate the operation of the rest of the compute nodes. The second type of server is the compute node; this is where work is actually performed. The head node can also be a compute node, but this is usually only the case for small clusters of less than 10 nodes…”
