Identity theft

I just read this piece on identity theft. So it then came as a funny coincidence that my insurance policy came to me in the mail. Part of my policy gives me coverage for identity theft. A whopping $10,000.00 is what I am covered for. There is little doubt that identity theft is a real problem. Question is though, just how widespread is it? To my knowledge there is no one that I know who has been a victim of this. What about you guys? Anyone you know affected by this?

I have had mine stolen. Police in the last state I lived in found my information in a raid. Nothing had been done with it yet. It was determined that the data was stolen from the bank I worked at and had my accounts with.

    Hi Mark,

Neat. Well kind of anyways :-) This is just one of those things ie: identity theft, that of course happens but I never actually knew of anyone personally of who it had happened to. Glad to hear though that no real damage was cause to you or your financial standing.

    Hope all is well,

    Don

I’ve known a family that has had their identity stolen. They caught it when credit card bills came in and they saw several charges on their account. The bank also noticed unusual purchases. There is a company UnlistAssit (dot) com, however that will remove your name from major online databases and directory lists for 3 years.

long time buddy of mine we both grow up on the same block here in Chicago (IL). While watching the basketball play-off, a commerical came on about identity theft how it’s getting out of control. Then out of the blue, my buddy told me he had his identity stolen, know one never knew because this was a guy who kept it all together. He said the thieves bought cars, real estate, clothes, etc - his credit cards were maxed out, I don’t even know why he had credit cards … he didn’t need them. Everything he bought was cash on the barrel!

To make this long story short, he didn’t know what hit him. The only way he found out, is the day we went to pick up his new 2004 cobra mustang. I can still smell the rubber he burt coming out of the dealership, and all I could hear behind us was the police siring. What turn out to be a ticket for speeding, instead turn into an arrest for identity fraud, no matter what he told the police - that wasn’t him… they just didn’t believe him.

It’s taking him 5 years to get some of his identity back in order, the moral to this story, the FBI says it will take you 10 years to straighten your identity out if it’s stolen.

    Be Very Careful,

    Terry Clark
