The virtues of virtualization

It seems that with that every passing year the virtualization market is growing. Many companies are waking up to the fact that running virtual servers makes good business sense. Though the same cannot be said of running VM images for end-users. That has yet to be adopted by mainstream corporate networks. Though I would wager it will gather steam in the next five years. Do any of you guys runs virtualized servers or workstations?

We currently run all of our main servers inside of VMware ESX 3 server. We have two physical servers connected to a SAN via fiber. We run Exchance, SQL, Filemaker server, Terminal servers and several file/print servers inside of our VMware setup. This system was chose due to the growth my company has experienced. The ESX system has allowed us to grow and expand our servers as needed with the biggest headache being licensing. We can add and remove drives to our virtual servers easily and adding additional physical storage for logical partitioning is also easy. Using ESX, IBM Xseries servers with Fibrechannel and SATA drives connected in a Fiber SAN has helped us create a fast, stable and scalable solution for the company. We have also began testing the VDI concept using virtulized Windows XP Pro machines with Wyse Winterms connecting to them for basic functions in our warehouse. This allows us to have cheaper devices in harsher enviroments that can be easily replaced and reconfigured if any there are any problems with the Winterm or the virtual workstation. A workstation can be easily cloned in VMware with Virtual Center.
