Company email and employee privacy

A recent column on Securityfocus makes the point that sometimes the legalaties of an issue will trump a companies stated policy. An employee’s right to privacy when using company assets is a thorny issue. Personally, I think an employee’s email is private, except when issues such as sexual harassment and the such, via email, come in to play. Beyond that, company computer or not, email should be private. Well let me refine that statement, when an employee uses the company email address to correspond to a personal acquaintance it should be private. That may not be a popular opinion but it is one that I subscribe to.
